Tuggle Duggins P.A. partner Robert C. Cone was recently honored by the North Carolina State Bar with its John B. McMillan Distinguished Service Award.   The award, which was presented to Cone by State Bar President Margaret Hunt at the meeting of the Greensboro Bar Association held October 20, 2016, recognizes North Carolina lawyers who have demonstrated exemplary service to the legal profession.

Cone is a past president of the GBA and served two terms as an elected representative of the 18th Judicial District Bar on the governing board of the State Bar.  He contributed hundreds of hours as a member of the State Bar’s Executive Committee, vice-chair of the Legislative Committee, vice-chair of the Grievance Committee, and member of the Ethics Committee.  Cone is a Master of the Bench and past president of the Guilford Inn of Court, an organization that promotes professionalism among the trial bar; and a co-founder of the Herb Falk Society, which encourages lawyers to engage in pro bono work.  Cone received the Centennial Award in 2011, presented jointly by the GBA and the State Bar for exemplary community service. Through the Falk Society and Legal Aid of North Carolina, Cone has counseled dozens of clients on a pro bono basis.

In his over 38 years of practicing law in Greensboro, Cone has been integral to a number of civic boards and organizations.  He is a past chairman of the board of Cone Health Foundation and a past president of the Rotary Club of Greensboro.  He is a past chairman of the Board of the Greensboro Public Library and past vice-chairman of the Greensboro Urban Ministry.  Cone has provided critical leadership to the Greensboro Jewish Foundation, Inc., Temple Emanuel, and the Old North State Council of the Boy Scouts of America, among others.

Cone was a Morehead-Cain Scholar at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he received his BA (1974) and his JD (1978).  He focuses his law practice on dispute resolution, litigation, mediation, and arbitration.  He has appeared as lead counsel in all of the North Carolina state courts, including the Business Court and the North Carolina Supreme Court, and in all of the federal courts in North Carolina.  Cone is a certified mediator in the state and federal courts of North Carolina.

“There is no one more deserving of this award”, said Nathan Duggins, managing partner of Tuggle Duggins. “We stand in awe of all that Bob has contributed to Greensboro and to the state in general, through his selfless work on behalf of others, all while maintaining a busy and succcessul law practice.”
